VO: RESEARCHERS SAY DIETS RICH IN OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS HELP THOSE WITH HEART DISEASE LIVE LONGER. A NEW STUDY LOOKS AT HOW HIGHER FISH OIL LEVELS PROTECT TELOMERES, THE PROTECTIVE CAPS ON CHROMOSOMES, FROM SHORTENING, WHICH MAY SLOW BIOLOGICAL AGING IN THESE PATIENTS.

“The main result from our study is that patients with high levels of Omega-3 fish oil in the blood appear to have a slowing of the biological aging process over five years as measured by the change in telomere length.”

VO: IN RESEARCH FEATURED THIS WEEK IN JAMA, JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, DR. RAMIN (RAH-MEAN) FARZANEH-FAR (FARH-ZAH-NAH-FAR) FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO AND CO-AUTHORS MEASURED THE TELOMERE LENGTH OF 608 STABLE CORONARY ATERY DISEASE PATIENTS TWICE OVER FIVE YEARS.

“Patients with the highest level of Omega-3 fish oils in the blood experienced the slowest rate of telomere shortening. Patients with the lowest levels experienced the fastest rate suggesting that they were undergoing a more rapid pace of aging.”
