VO: AS AMERICAN WOMEN AGE MANY BEGIN A WAR WITH THEIR WEIGHT. A NEW STUDY SHOWS FOR NORMAL WEIGHT MIDDLE AGED WOMEN AND OLDER, WHO EAT A REGULAR DIET, 60 MINUTES OF DAILY EXERCISE IS RECOMMENDED JUST TO MAINTAIN AND NOT GAIN WEIGHT AS THEY AGE. FOR OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE WOMEN 60 MINUTES WASN’T ENOUGH TO MAINTAIN AND NOT GAIN WEIGHT OVER TIME.
“We found that physical activity was effective in controlling weight only among women who started off with a normal BMI. The women who were overweight or obese, physical activity within the range done in the study was not sufficient to control their weight.”
VO: DR. I-MIN LEE FROM BRIGHAM AND WOMEN’S HOSPITAL IN BOSTON AND CO-AUTHORS STUDIED MORE THAN 34 THOUSAND WOMEN STARTING AT AN AVERAGE AGE OF 54 AND FOLLOWED THEIR ACTIVITY LEVEL FOR 13 YEARS. THE STUDY APPEARS IN THIS WEEK’S JAMA, JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION.
“The group of women as a whole gained weight, they gained on average about half a pound a year or 6 pounds over the 13 years of the study.”
