VO: MILLIONS OF OUTPATIENT SURGERIES ARE DONE EACH YEAR IN THE UNITED STATES FOR A WIDE RANGE OF PROCEDURES. IN THE LAST DECADE, THE NUMBER OF MEDICARE APPROVED OUTPATIENT SURGICAL CENTERS GREW MORE THAN 50 PERCENT, TO OVER FIVE THOUSAND. A NEW STUDY LOOKS AT INFECTION CONTROL PROCEDURES IN A SAMPLING OF THOSE CENTERS.

“About two thirds of the facilities had at least on lapse in infection control.”

VO: DR. MELISSA SCHAEFER FROM THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION AND CO-AUTHORS STUDIED DATA COLLECTED FROM 68 C-M-S CERTIFIED CENTERS IN MARYLAND, NORTH CAROLINA AND OKLAHOMA. INSPECTIONS WERE COMPLETED BETWEEN JUNE AND OCTOBER 2008. THE STUDY APPEARS IN THIS WEEK’S JAMA, JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION.

“The fact that we can describe in a sample of facilities, in multiple states, infection control practices I think, is important and it helps us to better target infection prevention messaging and education.”

VO: CATHERINE DOLF, THE JAMA REPORT.
