As Skin Cancer Rates Continue to Rise, Texas Oncology Reminds You to Protect Your Skin

Over the last two decades, skin cancer rates in the United States have doubled. Texas ranks fourth in the nation for reported incidences of malignant melanoma. Skin cancer is now the nation’s most common cancer and easily one of the most preventable, but, when left untreated, can be deadly.

As the Fourth of July weekend approaches and families head to pools, beaches and outdoor activities, Texas Oncology reminds Texans to take preventive measures for skin protection and makes the following recommendations:

• When outdoors, be smart about protecting yourself from harmful ultra-violet rays. Limit exposure between 10 A.M. and four P.M when the sun is the sun is the highest.

• Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher before heading outdoors and re-apply every two hours.

• Wear a hat, long-sleeved shirt, and sunglasses.

• Check your skin monthly and see a physician with any unusual changes. Early detection leads to higher survival rates.
