JAMA Advisory for July 6

TIGHT BLOOD PRESSURE CONTROL ASSOCIATED WITH WORSE OUTCOMES FOR PATIENTS WITH BOTH DIABETES AND CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE

EMBARGO TIME: 4pm (ET) Tuesday, July 6, 2010

SUMMARY:

National guidelines recommend patients with diabetes maintain a systolic blood pressure of less than 130 or a “tight control” versus a “usual control” blood pressure which is between 130 and 140. A new study shows having a blood pressure below 130 does not improve cardiovascular outcomes for patients who have both diabetes and coronary artery disease.
