JAMA Advisory for July 27
BARIATRIC SURGERY COMPLICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH LOW VOLUME HOSPITAL AND SURGEON PROCEDURE RATES
EMBARGO TIME: 4pm (ET) Tuesday, July 27, 2010
SUMMARY:
Bariatric surgeries for weight loss including the gastric bypass and adjustable gastric band procedures are now the second most common abdominal operations being performed in the United States. The safety and outcomes of these surgeries are still a concern. A new study in the state of Michigan shows while complication rates remain low, serious complications are associated with the volume of procedures done in hospitals and by surgeons.
